Thomas Paine Devyn’s Struggle V2 Chapter 34 Devyn had been right about being sore. He was moving slowly as he got out of bed and started his day. Mixing up the milk replacer for the baby calves was more work than ever. Lifting the bags of powder and bending was painful. “Damn,” Devyn said as he stood up from giving a bottle to the smallest calf. “I don’t think I have ever been this sore before.” As he was closing the door to the barn, Devyn saw Ethan turn up the hill. Devyn latched the door and turned to watch Ethan get out of the car. He slammed the car door hard enough to raddle the glass. “Hey,” Devyn said as the older guy walked up. “Hey,” Ethan growled. “What’s wrong,” Devyn asked. “I got another fucking speeding ticket,” Ethan almost shouted. “Today?” Devyn asked. “Yes, on the way here.” Ethan kicked the gravel sending rocks flying across the driveway. He knew he needed to calm down but it was not happening. “The same fucking cop! Fucking bastard must be watching for me.” “That sounds a little paranoid,” Devyn said. “When did you get the last one?” “Last week when I came out,” Ethan said. “And I got one the time before that.” “Shit three times in a row?” Devyn said. “Maybe you are right and he is watching for you. It was the same cop?” “Yeah,” Ethan said. “I swear the fucker has a hard-on for me. Which isn’t that bad as he is hot. He fills out his uniform really nicely but the tickets are starting to piss me off.” “It seems like they are past the pissing off point,” Devyn said. “Yeah, maybe,” Ethan said. “I will drive like someone’s 80-year-old granny the next time. ” “Maybe that will do the trick,” Devyn said. “You don’t say anything to Joe about the tickets,” Ethan said. “It isn’t a big deal.” “Sure,” Devyn said, “But drive slower dude.” “I will, I will,” Ethan said. “I am just always in a hurry to get over and see that big guy.” “I guess I understand that,” Devyn said. Devyn had moved to the water spigot and was cleaning up the bottle he had used to feed the smallest calf. “What exactly is that thing?” Ethan was watching Devyn rinsing out the bottle. He could not stop himself from glancing at the teenager’s butt. The guy filled out a pair of blue jeans well. “A calf bottle,” Devyn answered. “We have one that is just a few days old. He is a little weak and needs some extra attention.” Reaching over Ethan took the nipple from Devyn. “I was hoping this wasn’t some sort of dildo. I mean it is too spongy and not very thick to feel particularly good.” Devyn could not help but bust out laughing and laughed even harder when Ethan took the nipple and held it down to his crotch. “You are not right,” Devyn said between laughs. “It isn’t even big enough to be a strap on,” “Ethan said. “My pecker won’t fit in there.” “Ok, ok,” Devyn said, “no more info.” “It isn’t like you haven’t seen it,” Ethan said. “After last weekend we got no secrets” “Don’t remind me,” Devyn said. “Hey,” Ethan said. “How about we just go skinny dipping this time. You think Joe would go for it?” “Dude,” Devyn said. “What is the big deal,” Ethan said. “I already told you that you got nothing to be embarrassed about.” “Sure,” Devyn said. “Dude,” Ethan said. “Do you not look at yourself in the mirror?” “Ethan,” Devyn began. “I appreciate you trying to boost my ego.” “Fuck that,” Ethan said. “I call it like I see it. You have a damn handsome face. Those puppy dog eyes can make you look so cute and innocent. Plus, you have really filled out. You have added some good definition to your chest and arms. You got a dang nice body. It really showed last weekend. You got the whole package…and speaking of your package that is damn nice too.” Devyn felt his face blushing. He could feel the heat creeping up from his neck. He hoped Ethan would think it was from the sun. “Um, thanks,” Devyn said. “Why are you so hard on your looks?” Ethan asked. “I guess I just see the bad stuff,” Devyn said and shrugged. “Damn kid,” Ethan said. “See the good stuff. When you go off to college, you are going to be beating them off…I mean with a stick…well you might beat some of them off to…that is up to you.” “You are a horn dog,” Devyn said laughing. “Speaking of beating someone off, where is the sexy farmer?” Ethan asked. “He is rolling up hay,” Devyn said. “He will probably be out there all afternoon.” “Damn,” Ethan said and kicked the ground. “I was hoping to spend another Saturday goofing off.” “You know Joe doesn’t really goof off much,” Devyn said. “Last Saturday was kind of unique.” “He needs to relax more,” Ethan said. “He needs to have more fun.” “I think he does have fun with you,” Devyn said. “I think you are good for him.” “Well, how about bursa escort we go out and find the sexy farmer,” Ethan said. “We can take him something cool to drink.” “Sure,” Devyn said. “Let me just go in and find Travis. Devyn found Travis and they all three piled into the truck and Devyn drove them back to the field where Joe was rolling up hay. The field was littered with big round bales of hay. Joe was working his way down a windrow, the bailer pulling in the cut grass and rolling it around and around forming the big bales. Ethan and Travis were signing. Ethan’s signs were slow and deliberate and Devyn could tell that Ethan was struggling to keep up with Travis. Devyn parked the truck and the three of them watched as the machine opened and slid the big bail out. “What was that?” Ethan asked as he signed to Travis. Devyn turned and watched as Travis answered. “What am I missing?” Ethan asked. “I think he said it just pooped,” Devyn said. “Or took a shit.” Ethan laughed. “” I love that.” Devyn saw Joe bring the tractor to a stop and drove them closer. Ethan jumped out and met Joe in front of the tractor. “Hey,” Joe said. “I thought we agreed you were going to wait until tomorrow to come out.” “I was but things changed and I wanted to see you,” Ethan said. He stepped forward and pulled Joe into a hug. “Damn you are wet.” Joe’s shirt was soaked with sweat. “The damn AC went out in the tractor,” Joe explained. “It is like an oven in there.” “We brought you some water,” Ethan said and dashed back to the truck. “Maybe you should let the rest go until you can get the AC fixed.” “Nope,” Joe said. “I got to get it done today. It is going to rain tonight. If it rains then I will have to let it dry and probably have to rake it again. It will just be more work and more time away from you.” Ethan felt a warm tingling feeling in his belly at Joe’s words. He was always worried that the man might not be into him as much as he was into Joe. Joe drank down the water and handed the container back to Ethan. “If you want to bring me another one in say, in 2 hours, that would be great. Maybe you could come by yourself and we can have a long hello.” There was a suggestive twinkle in Joe’s eyes. “Mmmm,” Ethan said. “I like the sound of that.” “I thought you might,” Joe said, his lips curved up into a sensual grin. “Hey buddy,” Joe said to Travis. “Doing OK today?” “Yes,” Travis answered. “We going swimming?” “Maybe,” Joe said. “If I can get this done first.” “OK,” Travis said good naturedly. “Can you go pick up the milk for the calves?” Joe asked Devyn. “You have been with me enough that you know the routine. Just have them add it to my account.” “Sure,” Devyn said. “Is it OK if Travis goes?” “Sure,” Joe said. Then Joe stopped signing. “Maybe surprise him with an ice cream cone or milk shake.” “Sounds good to me,” Devyn said. “Do you have money?” Joe asked. “I have enough for some ice cream.” Devyn was glad that Joe trusted him to take care of Travis and to handle picking up the supplies. “Thanks,” Joe said and reached into the cab and squeezed Devyn’s shoulder. Turning he looked at Ethan. “I’m glad you made time to come out.” Leaning in he softly kissed Ethan’s lips. “I wish this wasn’t a busy time of year.” “It’s alright.” Ethan kissed Joe’s lips. “I’ll just hang out until you’re finished.” “I’m going to get back to it,” Joe said and turned and climbed back onto the tractor. He started working his way down the row of hay towards the line of trees at the other end of the 25 acres. “You want to go with us?” Devyn asked Ethan. “We should be back in a couple hours. Probably not even that long.” “Sure,” Ethan said. “Travis is fun to hang out with.” “Yes, he is,” Devyn said. “Much more fun than a college horn toad.” Devyn drove them back across the field and then onto the road and into town. Devyn thought that they should have enough time to go by the hardware store. He might get to see Charlie instead of relying on the phone. “Hi Devyn,” Mr. Meyers greeted him when he came into the feed and seed. “Hi Mr. Meyers,” Devyn said. “Joe sent me in to pick up some milk replacer for the calves. He is about out.” “Yelp,” Mr. Meyers said. “I have his order in back. I’ll have Terry load it into the truck. Just pull around.” “Thanks Mr. Meyer’s.” Devyn headed back towards the truck where Ethan and Travis were waiting. Devyn drove to the loading dock and jumped out to lower the tailgate. Devyn’s stomach flipped when he saw his former buddy Terry. “Um, Hi,” Devyn said. “Hi,” Terry said. “You pickin’ up the milk?” “Yes,” Devyn answered. “We got it stacked right here,” Terry said. “You is only gettin’ 10 bags, so it aint worth using the forklift.” They each picked up one of the large bags and carried it to the truck. They stacked them in the bed and then went back for another one. “You know Dewayne is still pissed at you,” Terry said breaking the silence. “I am still pissed at him too,” Devyn said. “What you got to be pissed about?” Terry asked. “The shit he was spouting,” Devyn said. “You pissed at me too then?” Terry asked. Devyn thought for a minute as they continued loading the bags into the truck. “You said some bad stuff that night,” Devyn finally said turning and facing Terry. “I can cut you a little slack because I should have been truthful with you from the start.” “So, is it true?” Terry asked. “You’re, um, a homo?” “I’m gay Terry,” Devyn said slapping his bag onto the stack in the truck. “I am really the same guy you were bursa escort bayan always hanging out with. Nothing has really changed except you know a little more about me.” “Yeah, but it ain’t right,” Terry said. “Who says?” Devyn said. “Everyone,” Terry answered. “No, they don’t,” Devyn said. “Only people that like to pick on something different. It is like the whole ugly duckling story. If you don’t look the same, if you do not act the same, then there must be something wrong with you.” “But doing it with another dude man,” Terry said. “How is that right?” “I feel the same way about how you can do it with a chick,” Devyn said. “It doesn’t do a thing for me.” “Yeah, but you and Mindy,” Terry said puzzled. “I watched you two…I mean I, um.” “It’s cool terry,” Devyn said. “You saw me. You saw me pretending to be something I am not. You also saw how much beer and pot it took for me to do it.” “I could never do it with a guy,” Terry said. “It just don’t feel normal to me.” “And doing it with a chick doesn’t feel normal to me,” Devyn responded. “Hmm,” Terry said. They had finished loading the last of the bags into the bed of the truck and were leaning against the tailgate. Looking into the cab, Terry can see Ethan and Travis signing to each other. It was looking like Travis was helping Ethan with his sign language skills. “That the deaf kid?” Terry asked. “Yeah, that is Joe’s nephew,” Devyn said. “He is a cool kid.” “Yeah, we heard about Joe’s sister,” Terry said. “That’s bad man. Is the guy your, um, friend?” Terry asked using his thumb to gesture at Ethan sitting in the cab with Travis. With the special emphasis Terry put on `friend’ Devyn knew what Terry was asking. “No, he is not my boyfriend. He is just a friend.” Devyn did consider Ethan a friend and it was really none of Terry’s business about Joe and Ethan’s relationship. So, Devyn chose to not volunteer any information. “Well,” Terry said. “I don’t know. I guess I don’t really see the big deal. You like dudes. As long as you aint trying’ to get into my pants why should I care.” “Exactly,” Devyn said. “But Dewayne,” Terry said. “He ain’t gonna be OK with it. You should probably just stay away from him.” “I am fine with that,” Devyn said. “If he can’t accept me for who I really am, then I don’t need him as a friend.” “You know you broke his nose,” Terry said. “I’m sorry about that,” Devyn said. “I lost my temper when he was spouting that crap.” “You throw a good punch when you’re pissed,” Terry said. “It almost made me piss myself.” “Sorry about that,” Devyn said. “It’s cool,” Terry said, waving it off. “You got every right to punch back and I was pushing you. I had been drinkin’ too much.” “Just don’t attack Joe or Travis and we can be fine,” Devyn said. “So, do you and, um, Joe…I mean are you two…” Terry trailed off not knowing how to ask the question and not sure he wanted to know the answer. “Joe and I are family,” Devyn said. “He is an amazing man and I love him. He is like a big brother or maybe even a dad sort of but we are not in a physical relationship.” Devyn saw the puzzled look on Terry’s face and decided to be blunter. “We don’t fuck.” “OK,” Terry said. “Just, um, curious. I had better get back to work.” “Ok,” Devyn said. “See you at school.” “Um, about that,” Terry said and looked down at his feet. “You know it has gotten around that you are, um, the way you are.” “I figured it would,” Devyn said. “Well, um, like I said Dewayne ain’t ever gonna be fine with it. So, um, if I don’t like talk to you and stuff…” “I understand,” Devyn said. “You can’t be seen hanging out with the gay kid. It might be contagious.” “Um, Yeah,” Terry said, still looking at his feet as he kicked around some loose seeds with his toe. “I’ll catch you later Terry,” Devyn said. “We got a couple other stops to make.” “Later,” Terry said. Devyn climbed back into the cab. He started the truck and looked in the mirror. He saw Terry watching them. “That seemed intense,” Ethan said. “I was going to jump out and help but it seemed like maybe you two needed to talk.” “I guess we did,” Devyn said. “Not sure what good it did.” “I heard some of it,” Ethan said. “He might come around and he might not. At least he is trying and you gave him a bit to think about.” “I guess,” Devyn said, pulling out of the loading area and back onto Main Street. “I am going to stop at the hardware store and then we can get the ice cream,” Devyn told Ethan. “What are we picking up at the hardware store?” Ethan asked. “There is a friend there I want to talk to,” Devyn said. “I haven’t seen him most of the summer because he was visiting his grandparents.” “Oh,” Ethan said, his voice teasing. “A friend? A boyfriend?” “A friend,” Devyn said. “At least a friend for now.” Devyn parked the truck. “You don’t mind waiting with Travis, do you?” he asked. “What while you go inside and make goo-goo eyes at some hot hardware?” Ethan said. “I’m just going to say hi,” Devyn said. “That is if he is even there.” “I think Travis and I should go with you.” Ethan was grinning as he talked. His grey eyes twinkling. “It would be fun watching you try and flirt with the hardware.” “Knock it off.” Devyn sighed and wondered if it was a good idea doing this with Ethan waiting. “Go on,” Ethan said reading the anxiety on Devyn’s face. “Travis and I will wait for you.” “Thanks.” Devyn slid from the truck and headed towards the door. He rubbed his hands on his jeans. He did not know why he was getting so nervous. If escort bursa Charlie were blowing him off, there was nothing he could do about it. He pushed through the door and headed towards the counter. He saw Charlie’s dad arranging some products on the shelf. “Hi Mr. Atwood.” “Oh, hi Devyn,” he said. “Can I help you find anything?” “Um, maybe,” Devyn said. “I was actually looking for Charlie.” “Well, I only have one of those,” Mr. Atwood said chuckling. “Um, Yeah,” Devyn said. “Is he around?” “He’s in back, loading up the truck,” Mr. Atwood said. “We have a service call to get to as soon as my wife gets here to take over the store. Just then the door opened again and Mrs. Atwood walked in. “Here she is now.” “Sorry,” She said. “I couldn’t get away from Wilma at the bank.” “No one can,” Mr. Atwood said. “Hi Devyn,” Mrs. Atwood greeted. “Hello,” Devyn responded. “Did you give up on the phone,” She said, “and come to just track him down?” “I was in town picking stuff up so thought I would give it a shot.” “Come on back,” Mr. Atwood said and led Devyn back to the storeroom. “Hey Charlie,” he called as they entered the large room. His voice was echoing a bit off the metal. “You have someone that wants to see you.” Charlie came around the other side of the truck. He spotted Devyn and his eyes opened a little wide in surprise. “Hey,” Devyn said. “Um, what are you doing here?” Charlie asked, his tone was sounding a little sharp to Devyn. “I, um, was just in town and thought, thought I would say hi.” Devyn was a little more worried now. He wondered if just stopping at the store was a good idea. “I thought I would see how California was?” “I can give you two a few minutes,” Mr. Atwood said. “Then we got to get going.” “Um, sure Dad,” Charlie said. “This won’t take long.” Mr. Atwood left the two boys alone. Devyn looked at Charlie. He thought his friend had grown an inch or so during the summer. He looked tanner as well. His blonde hair even seemed a little blonder. “I, um, tried to call,” Devyn started. “I know,” Charlie said. He still sounded annoyed to Devyn. “I just wanted to say hi,” Devyn tried again. “See if you had fun in California.” Charlie glanced nervously towards the office. He then looked back at Devyn. He rubbed his hands against the legs of his jeans as he began to speak. “Yeah, the trip was great,” Charlie said. “It is a really cool place. I was at the beach every day. It was a lot of fun.” Great,” Devyn said trying to put excitement into his voice for his friend. “It was nice to be away and clear my head,” Charlie said. “I needed to think about stuff.” Charlie caught movement out of his eye and glanced again at the office. “And did you?” Devyn asked. “I did,” Charlie said. “I hung out at the beach a bunch. I went to church with my grandparents and talked to some nice people out there. I went on a few dates with this girl. She was so hot and we had a blast together…if you know what I mean.” Devyn looked up and met Charlie’s gaze for a second. Then Charlie looked away. “So, you had fun with her?” Devyn asked. He could not believe what was happening. Was Charlie saying he was not gay? Was Charlie dumping him before they even started? “A real blast,” Charlie said. “So, our talk earlier this summer? Devyn asked. Although he suspected he already knew the answer. Charlie looked at the office door again. “It was just talk,” Charlie said. He shifted his eyes down to the floor. “I, um, was just, um, sorting things out in my head. I mean you had just dropped a big bomb shell on us. I was just trying to, um, get it right in my head.” “Oh, and do you have it right in your head now?” Devyn asked. “I, um, think it is ok for some guys to be like that,” Charlie said. “I just am not like that. I, um, think guys like that are strange.” “Oh,” Devyn said. “You think guys like that are strange. You think guys like me are strange.” “I don’t mean anything about it,” Charlie said. “I know you can’t help it. You are how you are. But I’m not. I am not like that.” For Devyn it was almost like reliving his last conversation with Brent. He was feeling almost as bad as when Brent had shut the door in his face. He felt the hurt all over again. He felt the disappointment. Devyn really thought he and Charlie had felt something. He really thought he and Charlie had made a connection. He could not believe he was being dumped and they had never really gotten started. “I had better go,” Devyn said. “I need to get home.” “Sure,” Charlie said. “We will see each other in school.” “I guess so,” Devyn said. Charlie watched Devyn leave. He felt uneasy about how things had gone. He had seen the hurt in Devyn’s eyes. He felt bad that he had hurt his friend. He looked over at the office and bit his lip. He was afraid that what he and Devyn had been talking about might have been overheard. He wished he were braver. He wished he were stronger. Devyn hurried out of the storeroom and back towards the front of the store. He paused for only a second to say bye to Mrs. Atwood. He paused before stepping out of the store. He had really thought he was going to have a friend. He really thought that Charlie was going to be a buddy. He wiped at his eyes then went out into the bright afternoon sun. He pushed his feelings down and smiled. “Who is ready for Ice cream?” he said and signed to Travis. Travis started bouncing in his seat and signing rapidly.
